What’s a cookie?

Cookies are small text files that are stored in the web browser on your computer, smartphone, iPad or any other device you use for net surfing when you visit our website. Types of cookies

Two types of cookies are used: Session cookies and persistent cookies. Session cookies are de-leted automatically from your browser when you shut it down. Persistent cookies are stored on your hard drive for a predetermined time period after which they expire. Persistent cookies can however be replaced with a new cookie each time you visit the website.

A distinction is made between performance cookies and functionality cookies: Performance cookies collect information about your use of the website, such as webpages visited and any error messages; they do not collect personal information. Performance cookies are used to improve how a website works. Functionality cookies allow the website to remember any choices you make about the website such as changes to text size, customised pages or enable services such as commenting on a blog.

A distinction is also made between first-party cookies and third-party cookies. First-party cookies are placed by the website you visit eg Third-party cookies are placed by a third party having elements embedded on the website that you visit. Third-party cookies are placed by web analytics software such as Google Analytics and WebTrends.
